Service/DEI overview
One of my strongest values is love of learning. This has motivated me to work hard in my academic life, and combined with some luck and great mentors, I have been able to learn so much over the course of my life. I believe that it is my responsibility to use the skills and knowledge I have learned to benefit the community I live in. During my PhD, I have engaged in several service activities that reflect the values I hold and the changes I would like to see. I believe that these service activities are not a distraction from research, but a supplement to my learning and discovery, as well.
My service activities can be categorized into four main areas. These areas are:
- Policy analysis and policy making
- Increasing diversity in engineering
- Education and engagement with the community
- Improving mental wellness in college environments
I believe that these four areas overlap quite a bit, and they all work towards supporting a society where people can be creative and engaged. As an engineer, I love solving problems using the skills and courage I have been taught by so many mentors. I hope that, through my service, I can share some of the wisdom I have collected.
I am also a recipient of the NSF’s Graduate Research Fellowship Program. Because I could have never received this award without the advice of strangers and mentors, I want to give back by describing how I structured my application so that future applicants can learn more.
